Biography

HALVOR TALLEIVSON was born at Skafså in 1651. He may have farmed the land with his father beginning around 1678, although this is uncertain. He obtained the farm, in 1688, after his father died, as was usual for the oldest son. He sold some of the land in 1698. He had mortgages on the farm between 1700-1718, but owned it free of debt after 1718.

In 1695, HALVOR got the allodial rights to Seltveit and got the farm free of debt for 370 rd in 1697. He bought more between 1701 and 1721, including Mykli, which he bought from his brother Olav in 1706. HALVOR then gave Skafså to his son, and HALVOR moved to Seltveit, near Skasfå. He remained there almost until the time he died.

TORBJØRG OLAVSDOTTER was born at Viken in 1658. She became the sole heir to Viken after her father died in 1666. HALVOR TALLEIVSON farmed there from 1680-1696.

TORBJØRG died at S.Tveiten in 1729, with a sizeable estate. When HALVOR died, in 1739, the mortgage on Viken, reduced his estate to 283 rd, which was divided among the heirs.

Talleiv Halvorson Skafså 5a (1629-Sk.1688) accompanied his mother to Gåstjønn and grew up there. Already in 1641 Talleiv is called allodial owner of Skafså. He had then 1 tn 1½ mK at the farm and ½ tnK at Tveiten. From 1657 he had land at Rui, Tveiten, Brokka, Skræi, Mykli, Rygnestad and Skafså. In 1688 Talleiv sued his stepfather Olav Gåskjønn and Gunstein Ormson Tveiten in Bykle for 40 rd. His stepfather had been a grievance officer for him during years 1635 to 1645. Four years later he was sued by Gunnar Listog for half of Mykli, Talleiv had purchased the rydning [area cleared by removing rocks to the perimeter] rights in 1659 from him and his father for 20 rd. N. 1678-1710

English translation

Talleiv shared the farm with a Halvor from 1678. Perhaps it was his son Halvor Talleivson, but later there were two with the name Halvor at the farm. Then there was Halvor Alvson N. Åmli 8 who used a part of Skafså next to his own farm. He owned 3 quarter tnK which he had inherited after his mother died. He mortgaged these in 1700 to Kristoffer Blom for 120 rd, but bought them back and mortgaged them to Hans Tysk in Arendal. Early in 1718 he sold to Halvor Talleivson Skafså for 500 rd.

N. 1688

Halvor Talleivson kjøpte 3 kvart tnK frå Halvor Alvson N. Åmli for 500 rd i 1718.

English translation

Halvor Talleivson Skafså 8a (1651-1739) obtained the farm after his father died as was usual for the oldest son. He may have used the farm earlier (see Skafså 9), but it is not likely. In 1698 he sold ½ tnK skyldgods [assessed land value] in Tveiten to Talleiv Knutson for 24 rd.

In 1695 Halvor got the allodial rights to Seltveit and bought the farm in 1697. After that he used Seltveit 9 under Skafså.

Halvor Talleivson bought 3 quarter tnK from Halvor Alvson N. Åmli for 500 rd in 1718. He bought the allodial rights to this part in 1721 from Olav Ånundson Groven in Eidsborg for 20 rd. His son then got Skafså and he himself moved to Seltveit.

Halvor was married to Torbjørg Olavsdtr Viken 5a (1658-1729) and used Viken 8 for a time before they came to Skafså. Probate was held after Torbjørg died at S.Tveiten in 1729. The land estate was 2½ tnK allodial property in Skafså, 2 tnK in Viken, 1 tn 4 mK in Seltveit, 1 tnK in Torstveit, 1 tnK in Lid in Mo and ½ tnK in Mykli. With the personal property, the value of the estate was estimated at a total 2215 rd. Probate after Halvor died was held at Viken in 1739. He then had some mortgage on Viken so there was 283 rd to divide.

Olav did not live long after that, for his probate was held after he died the same year. His wife was Anne Talleivsdtr Jordet 6a and they owned Viken and the abandoned Torstveit farm, but had indebtedness of over 209 rd. Only two years later probate was held after the widow Anne Talleivsdtr died. It was the same land, but indebtedness was only 30 rd. Torjus Jordet had received Torstveit and the Hovden pasture for 98 rd which he should have.

9.      Halvor
N. 1698-1728

English translation

Halvor [Jonson] was sued in 1695 by Halvor Talleivson Skafså 11 for the allodial property at Seltveit. Halvor Skafså's wife, Torbjørg Olavsdtr from Viken, was first in line for this allodial property, he believed. It happened that Halvor Skafså got the farm free of debt in 1697 for 370 rd. He also paid 9 rd to Gunnar Ådneson Vesterdal for the allodial rights in 1702 and 41 rd to Olav Gunnarson in 1714. After that Halvor Seltveit farmed close to Skafså almost until he died. Right before 1730 he traded a farm with his son-in-law Olav Jonson S.Tveiten 9. Both Olav and his wife Anne Halvorsdtr died at Seltveit in 1730 and probate was held after they died, but that is told under S.Tveiten.
