Biography

TALLEIV HALVORSON's father died when TALLEIV was but an infant. His mother, TONE TALLEIVSDOTTER, married second to Olav Olavson of Gåstjønn, and TALLEIV lived at Gåstjønn with them.

By the time TALLEIV was twelve years of age, he was called owner of Skafså. Later, he had land at Rui, Tveiten, Brokka, Skræi (Fyresdal), Mykli, Rygnestad (Aust Agder) and Skafså. In addition, he sold land at Rinde, V.Naper (Fyresdal) and Heggard. Later, he got a mortgage at Heggard. Probate after TALLEIV died, disclosed even more land he owned, including land at Midtgarden Klauvreid, Gausbu, Brokke i Veum (Fyresdal), and Trae in Åmotsdal (Vinje).

It was when TALLEIV was about the age of thirty, that he got the rights to Mykli. The farm was far away to the west, but he had help from tenant farmers. He was sued a couple of times over the rights and ownership, but he prevailed and kept the farm until his death. TALLEIV left Mykli to his son Olav. Mykli is on present day Highway 45, the road to Setesdal (in Aust-Agder), downriver from Borsæ Lake.

N. 1678-1710

Talleiv shared the farm with a Halvor from 1678. Perhaps it was his son Halvor Talleivson, but later there were two with the name Halvor at the farm. Then there was Halvor Alvson N.Åmli 8 who used a part of Skafså next to his own farm. He owned 3 quarter tnK which he had inherited after his mother died. He mortgaged these in 1700 to Kristoffer Blom for 120 rd, but bought them back and mortgaged them to Hans Tysk in Arendal. Early in 1718 he sold to Halvor Talleivson Skafså for 500 rd.

8.      Dreng
N. 1620-1674

Han stal brød, smør, fisk og to striskjorter. Skifte etter Dreng vart halde i 1674. Kona var Ingebjørg Tarjeisdtr. Jordeiga var Åsland og ½ tnK i Mykli.

English translation

In 1624 Dreng Ormson Åsland 4a (1594-Sk.1674) had, together with his brother, 4 tnK in Åsland, 1 tnK i Skredtveit and 1 mK in Åmli in Setesdal. He himself had purchased the 2 mK in Haugehåtveit which Halvor Moghus had in 1615.

Early in the 1620's legal actions started regarding Åsland. Talleiv Åsmundson Rygnestad in Valle and his brother wanted to have 1/3 of the farm as inheritance after their grandmother Torbjørg Drengsdtr died. Dreng and Tarjei offered the Rygnestad folks equivalent land property at another place and tried to give them Midtgarden Byrte. Talleiv Rygnestad was not pleased with that. Midtgarden was a mountain farm without arable land which had been a field in old times. At Åsland there was uncultivated ground and lots of room for new cultivation. The farm had been three huslende [smaller farms] in old times, Åsland, Jordet and Bakken. Kjetil Bilstad testified in 1627 that the place where the farm stood, was called Myre. That was until the Rygnestad folks got the inheritance themselves and Bakken was made separate as its own farm.

Dreng Ormson was living at his farm, in peace, after this lawsuit. He had his own 4 tnK and was the user until he was about 80 years old. In 1667 he had a visit from a robber at the farm. It was Jon Olavson Vik from Setesdal. He stole bread, butter, fish and two shirts. Probate after Dreng died was held in 1674. His wife was Ingebjørg Tarjeisdtr. His land ownership was Åsland and ½ tnK in Mykli.

4.      Olav
N. 1618-1640

English translation

It was Vetle Storåsli who had the farm in 1615 and 1624. It was at that time written as 1½ tnK, but the assessed land value in 1647 and later was barely 1 tn 2 mK. Then it was Olav Gåskjønn who was farm owner. The farmers were merely farm folks and little known. Bjørn was married in 1645. After him, followed Åsuv and Gunnar (1614-). In 1661 it was Talleiv Skafså who had the farm.

Olav was church warden in Mo from 1667 to 1669. In 1678, Talleiv Skafså asked the common people in Mo whether Olav Pålson, who lived at Rui, had received some of his income while he was the warden for the church. The common people replied that he had not had any money at the time he was in the Mo district. So, Olav was probably dead or had left.

1.      Gunnar
N. 1659

English translation

At this time Mykli was cleared back. It was Gunnar and his son who began the work. They improved the houses and cleared the place of forest debris. The farm was little suited for grain since it was high in the mountains. Therefore, they sold the clearing rights to Talleiv Skafså for 20 rd in 1659. In 1672, Gunnar Gunnarson Listog summoned Talleiv into court for the rights to the farm. Talleiv had not paid the 20 rd and he was therefore ordered to pay.

2.      Talleiv
N. 1664-1679

English translation

So it was Talleiv Halvorson Skafså 8 who obtained Mykli. He inherited the farm with his wife, Anne Drengsdtr Åsland 8b, but probably had tenant farmers to run the farm. He and the coheirs were sued for the rights to Mykli by Jorunn Gunnarsdtr Døli in 1686, but they won the lawsuit of the previously mentioned document concerning the ownership.

6.      Olav
N. 1664-1679

English translation

Olav Talleivson Skafså 8c (1671-1731) inherited 4½ setK at Mykli after his father died in 1688 and used the farm some years. Around 1700 he married Anne Åsulsdtr Dølo and moved then to N.Håtveit 19.
