JOSEPH HULL was born about 1595, in Crewkerne, Somersetshire, England. He attended St. Mary's Hall in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, and graduated May 22, 1612. He received a B. A. on Nov. 14, 1614. He was a teacher and curate (clergyman) between 1615 and 1621 in Colyton, Devonshire, England. He was a rector of Northleigh diocese of Exeter in 1621. He resigned as rector of Northleigh on religious scruples in 1632.
Rev. JOSEPH HULL came to America in 1635. He sailed with 21 families of followers, his second wife, Agnes, seven children and three servants (106 people) on March 20. They arrived at Boston, Suffolk, MA, on May 5. He resided first in Wessaguscus. He resided, after June 1635, in Weymouth, Norfolk, MA. He was made freeman on Sep. 2, 1635 in Weymouth. In 1636 he settled in Hingham, Plymouth, MA (the part now Hull). He was a preacher between 1636 and 1639 in Weymouth, the first minister of Weymouth. He served as first deputy from Hingham in 1638. He had a house-lot granted him "on the Lower Plain."
He founded Barnstable, Barnstable, MA, in 1639, serving as one of the first two representatives on Sep. 3, 1639. He was a freeman on Dec. 3, 1639, in Barnstable. He resided in 1641 in Weymouth.
He was a minister at Isle of Shoals, York, ME, in 1641, and was excommunicated for going to Yarmouth to serve as minister without leave of fellow church members. He resided in 1642 in York County, Maine. He was readmitted to the church on Aug. 10, 1643, in Barnstable. He witnessed (with Agnes) Henry Simpson's deed in July, 1645 in York County, Maine. and witnessed Henry Simpson's will on Mar. 18, 1647 in York County, Maine. He was a minister (returned to England leaving all but his smallest children) in 1652 in Launceston, Cornwall, England. He was ejected from rectory in 1662 in St. Buryan, Cornwall, England. He resided in 1662 in Oyster River, Dover, New Hampshire. He was a preacher before 1665 in Isle of Shoals, Oyster River, York, Maine. He died on Nov. 19, 1665 in Old Parish, Accomenticus, York, Maine. He professed his religion as Episcopalian. He was buried in York.
For many years it was thought that the first wife of JOSEPH HULL was Joanna Coffin.
That theory was debunked years ago.
