The HULL family, of English ancestry, is an old an aristocratic family in England, affiliated by blood and marriage with the nobility. It is recorded in the Herald's Distinctions of Devonshire, but the original name, de la Hulle, in Shropshire, in the reign of Edward II, indicates that the earlier ancestors were from Normandy.
Allied to this family was THOMAS HULL of Crewkerne, Somersetshire, England, whose wife was JOANE PESON. One of their sons, William, was a graduate of St. Mary's Hall, Oxford, England, and was created Vicar of Colyton, in Devonshire, in 1611. Four other sons were emigrants to New England and among its early distinguished colonists.
THOMAS was a "pikeman" and his brother Raymond a "billman" in a military unit when an invasion by Spain
was feared.
