Biography

TROND SONDRESON was from Svalastoga in Vinje, about 20 Km north of Skredtveit. He married GUNHILD SVEINSDOTTER and inherited the Skredtveit farm with her. That inheritance would have occured about 1669, after GUNHILD's father died. There was a dispute over that land in 1686, but TROND prevailed at the court hearing, and he farmed at Skredtveit most of his life.

After GUNHILD died in 1693, her probate disclosed "an especially wealthy" estate. In addition to Skredtveit, she had property at Edland, Tveit, Everland, and Rui. All of these were in Grungedal in Vinje.

TROND also farmed some at Åse, as his son Odd's wife had farm rights there. He probably farmed this simultaneously with Skredtveit. He is known to have been there between 1691 and 1707. In 1694, an unfortunate incident happened at Åse, which involved TROND:

On March 13, 1694, TROND was invited over to Per Okse's cottage along with Siver Knutson. They all lived at Åse. TROND turned down the invitation as he had something to do at his place at Skredtveit. Meanwhile, Per and Siver went to TROND's cottage and drank his beer. The next day, TROND returned, and there was more beer drinking, and a fight ensued, The police were summoned and Siver drew his sword and hit the soldier (policeman). Siver then attacked TROND who defended himself with an axe. Siver was struck in the head, with the axe, and died several days later. TROND was found, in court, to have acted in self-defense.

After the court case, TROND moved to Skredtveit.

6.      Svein
N. 1641-1667

Først i 1641 finn me ein mann me kjenner på garden.

Matrikkelen 1647 syner at Svein Skredtveit og Gunnar Åse åtte halve garden kvar.

Denne kom for retten i 1686.

English translation

Early in 1641 we find a man we recognize at the farm. His name was Svein Mikkelson (1616-Sk.1669) and he was from Nordlien in Vinje. He was a son of Mikkel Sveinson Lien and farmed Paradis in Vinje simultaneously with Skredtveit. Perhaps Mikkel lived also at Skredtveit for a time? A Mikkel Skredtveit was a lagrettemann [juror] in 1627. Probate after Mikkel Sveinson Nordlien died was held in 1664. His land ownership was 2½ tnK in Nordlien and 1 tnK in Skredtveit. Land in Homme in Treungen and Steinstad in Setesdalen was sold.

From a lawsuit from 1665 we see that Svein Skredtveit had a sister, Gunhild Sveinsdtr, who was married to Såvi and had a daughter, Sigrid Såvisdtr, married to Kjetil Talleivson Kolkjøn. Sigrid inherited Skredtveit after her father's mother died and Svein got Nordlien.

Svein Mikkelson got some of the inheritance at Skredtveit also. He sold the inheritance of his wife, ½ tnK in Hærstad in Fyresdal, to Rolv Gunleikson for 60 rd. Kjetil Kolkjøn got this money, as then he lived at Tveiten (in exchange) for his own inheritance of Skredtveit. Kjetil also got a horse from the widow Asgjerd in 1668.

Svein was married to Asgjerd Alvsdtr N.Tveiten 1c in Skafså and inherited Paradis with her. They also got land in N.Tveiten 4 which they used for some years. In 1652 it was a Talleiv Tveiten of Skafså who sued (Auvor?) Lunderhall about a probate at Tveit in Skafså and Rygnestad in Setesdalen. Talleiv Tveit was homeless when Svein Skredtveit had ordered him from the farm.

Svein was a church warden in Mo as early as 1639.

The 1647 matrikkelen [tax rolls] show that Svein Skredtveit and Gunnar Åse had half the farm each. Gunnar got his own part from his father-in-law Tarjei Ringestoga.

There was a disagreement about the inheritance after Svein and Asgjerd died. This came from the rights in 1686. It was said that Svein had purchased the farm from their heirs after Gunnar Åse and Gunleik Bakken died in Flatdal. He had no allodial rights, but probably Asgjerd had. Probate after his father died indicates something else, it may be that it was only mortgaged property he was left with. Svein had himself purchased lease rights to the farm in 1650. In 1667, Svein got Tovsland in Grungedal from Paul Druchen in return for S.Lauvvik. After he died, probate was held in 1669. They owned then 2½ tnK in Lien, 2 tnK in Tovsland, 1½ mK in Mosli, 2 tnK in Skredtveit and 1 tn 1 mK in Paradis.

Saka i 1686 syner at Trond Sondreson hadde odel i Skredtveit.

Her var fleire hundre rd i uteståande krav, sylv for over 70 rd, reiskapar og koparkjelar.

English translation

It was Trond Sondreson Svalastoga (ca.1645-Sk.1709) from Vinje who got to use Skredtveit after Svein died. He was married to Gunhild Sveinsdtr Skredtveit 6d and inherited the farm with her. By means of the first probate they received 1 tnK in the farm and ½ tn 2 notK in Paradis. Bjug Snarteland complained at the probate in 1686 and it was resolved in this manner that Trond got all of Skredtveit in return for paying Bjug 70 rd. Trond had supported his mother-in-law Asgjerd until she died. In addition, he had paid 260 rd in debt after Svein died.

The lawsuit in 1686 shows that Trond Sondreson had allodial property in Skredtveit. He was a descendent of Olav Halvorson Moghus in Fyresdal who bought 2 markebol of the farm of Halvor Torjusson. The document does not have any date of the report, but is probably from around 1600.

Trond was the church guardian in Mo 1676 to 1678. He bought in 1676 one-fourth of the farm from Åvold Ringestoga and his siblings, they were children of Gunnar Åse.

There was a probate held after Gunhild Sveinsdtr died in 1693. The property was 2 tnK in Skredtveit, 2 tn 1 mK in Edland with Gjesløs, 1/2 tnK in Tveiten in Grungedal, 1/2 tnK in Everland in Grungedal and 1 tnK in Rui in Grundedal. There were several hundred rd in outstanding claims, silver for over 70 rd, equipment and copper kettles. All 900 rd was in addition to the land property and there was almost no debt. An especially wealthy estate.

His son Odd Trondson married Åse and we find from 1691 that his father Trond Skredtveit used Åse 16 some years. He probably had land at both the farms simultaneously. Trond Åse experienced in 1684 [sic, probably 1694] an unfortunate event which is described under Åse. He happened to kill a soldier by name Siver Knutson. Trond was acquitted, but had to pay 40 lodd [1 lodd = 14.6246 grams] silver to father of the dead one. We find him after that back at Skredtveit. Probate after Trond died was held in 1709. The ownership was all of Skredtveit, 1 tnK in Everland, Strømstøyl under Tveit in Grungedal and 5 quarter tnK in Tveit. The value was over 1084 rd and Trond was almost debt-free.

Ikring 1685 dela Åsul garden i to og let då Gunnar få bruka eine halvdelen.

English translation

Around 1685 Åsul divided the farm in two and then let Gunnar have the use of one half. After he died, came Halvor Alvson N.Åmli 8. Halvor was married to Margit Jonsdtr Åse 11b. In 1692 Halvor subpeonaed Trond Sondreson Skredtveit 7 into court because Trond had taken Åse from him. Trond came on behalf of his son Odd Trondson who was married to the widow Guri Jonsdtr Berdal from Åse 11. Halvor had changed the deed while she was a widow and divided Åse in two parts. Halvor himself had taken the best part (the southernmost part).

The court agreed with Trond and he got, on behalf of his son, the use of the farm for the same amount of time as Halvor. Trond stayed both at Skredtveit 7 and Åse. On March 13, 1694 Trond was invited to drummer Per Okse's together with Corporal Siver Knutson. They had quarters at Åse. Trond replied that he didn't have time, there was something he must do at Skredtveit. Siver and Per went into Trond's cottage and began to drink his beer.

After a while they sent word to Åsuv Ringestoga to obtain a horse from him. Åsuv and several others came and they drank Trond's beer. Siver was angry with Trond, and when Trond came back home to Åse the next day, he took Siver along with him into the house and forced him to drink beer. They quarreled and Per gave Trond a slug in the mouth. Trond wanted to go and file a complaint with Captain Ditlef Grube. Per and Siver were then concerned about punishment and wanted to stop it both with praise and then with force. The soldier Gregar came and Corporal Siver Knutson drew his sword and struck hard at the soldier, so he crawled under the table. Trond went out and the Corporal ran after him. Trond defended himself with an axe and Siver was hit in the head. He died the night before March 19th.

Trond Sondreson sent a petition (application) to the king about a restraining order until the lawsuit came up in court. It was found that he acted in self-defense. So, he was not an outlaw, but had to pay 40 lodd [1 lodd = 14.6246 grams] silver to Knut Siverson from Skien who was the deceased's father.

After this court case Trond Sondreson moved back to Skredtveit 7, and we find two Olav's at the farm. The first was named Olav Sigurdson and was from Moghus in Fyresdal. His wife was Sigrid Torjusdtr Jordet 7d (1675-1742) from Skafså, and he inherited 1 tnK in Åse with her. They used also Listog 12 some years.
