Biography

JOHN INGERSOLL was born in 1626. He was in Hartford, Hartford, CT, by 1651, as in April of that year he married Dorothy Lord, daughter of Thomas and Dorothy Lord. Thomas Lord was an original proprietor of Hartford.

n 1655, JOHN, with his family removed to Northampton, Hampshire, MA, where his wife died in giving birth to her third daughter, Jan. 3, 1656/57. Dorothy was only twenty-six years old.

On Dec. 12, 1657, he married for his second wife, ABIGAIL BASCOM, daughter of THOMAS BASCOM, one of the first settlers of Windsor, Hartford, CT, but who resided later at Northampton.

In 1666, JOHN and his family removed to Woronoco, which was the indian name for Westfield, Hampden, MA. It is recorded in the town book of Westfield, that in the year 1666 land was granted to JOHN INGERSOLL and others, and that he settled there in that year. Soon after arriving there, ABIGAIL died leaving four more daughters. JOHN now had seven daughters to raise.

He married third, Mary Hunt in 1668 at Westfield, Hampden, MA. She was the granddaughter of Gov. JOHN WEBSTER.

In 1669 an grant of an additional 20 acres was given. This land remained in possession of the Ingersoll family for generations and is known as "Ingersoll Place." In 1679, he was one of the "Seven Pillars" or "Foundation Men" who united to form the church at Westfield.

JOHN died in Westfield, Sep. 2, 1684, in the seventieth year of his age and his grave can be found at the old Westfield Cemetery. Mary died Aug. 18, 1690, at Westfield.
