WILLIAM GURLEY came from Scotland, probably Inverness, where he was born in 1665. There is no record of his parents. He arrived in Northampton, Hampshire, MA, in 1679, at the age of 14. He was raised by the family of Rev. Solomon Stoddard of Northampton.
HESTER INGERSOLL and WILLIAM married about 1684 in Northampton, Hampshire, MA, the same place she was born. WILLIAM died by accidental drowning in the Connecticut River on May 21, 1687, leaving an only child, a son about a year old.
HESTER married second on Jan. 23, 1687/88 to Benoni Jones. She and Benoni had four children. Benoni, and his two youngest children, Ebenezer and Jonathan, were slain by Indians at Poscummuck, at the north end of Mt. Tom, Northampton, May 13, 1704.
HESTER was captured by the Indians, at the time her husband and children were killed, and carried to
Canada, and there died after being tormented by the Catholic priests who were trying to convert her.
