SAMUEL STETSON was born in June, 1646 in Scituate, Plymouth, MA, and baptised there July 12, 1646. He married LYDIA PICKLES in Scituate in 1678.
In the year 1700, Cornet ROBERT STETSON deeded to SAMUEL the house and farm on which SAMUEL and his family were living. It was one of several farms owned by the Cornet as he deeded at least one farm to each of his sons. Based on the wording in the deed, it is likely that SAMUEL had occupied the farm from the time of his marriage in 1678.
SAMUEL's name appears frequently on church and town records. As early as 1692 he was connected with the second saw mill on the "3rd Herring Brook". This continued in his family for five generations - 142 years.
On May 14, 1731, when SAMUEL was 85 years old, he deeded to his son, Jonah, the land and dwelling he
had been given by his own father. Jonah also assumed operation of the saw mill, and it became known as
"Jonah's Mill" for more than a hundred years. Three more generations (Jonah 2nd, Micah and Ebenezer)
would run the mill before it was sold in 1832 to Samuel Salmond. Later it was known as "Tiffany", who
eventually inherited the mill.
