Biography

ISRAEL NICHOLS was baptized in Hingham, Plymouth, MA, Sep. 1, 1650. He was married three times but, the names of only his first two wives were mentioned in his will. Mary, his first wife, he married on Sep. 26, 1679. Her last name is not known. She died Mar. 26, 1688.

His second wife was his cousin, MARY SUMNER, born about 1664. She died Feb. 27, 1723/24, at age 59. Her mother, MARY JOSSELYN, was the sister of his mother, REBECCA JOSSELYN.

On June 24, 1725, at age 74, ISRAEL married for the third time, Rebecca Lincoln, widow of John Clark, and daughter of Samuel and Martha Lincoln. She was born in Hingham Mar. 11, 1673/74 and died Feb. 4, 1757.

ISRAEL was elected Constable in 1690. His occupation is given as "weaver". He resided on "Green Hill" in Hull, and on Jerusleum Road, having moved his house across Straits Pond on the ice before 1695, when the selectmen appointed Samuel Jacobs "to lay out a highway for Israel Nichols near his new dwelling house ay Cohasset."

In his will dated Jan. 1, 1733/34, and proved Feb. 21, 1733/34, he bequeathed to his sons, Nathaniel, Jazaniah, Roger and Israel, and to his daughters and grandchildren, land at Lancaster, purchased from Aaron Hobart. He directed the children by his first wife shall "build a monument over her grave", and that the executors of the will shall "erect one over mine".

ISRAEL's estate was appraised at £249 18s. 6d, which included £200 in cash. In 1727, a large part of his real estate was purchased by his four sons.
