MARY JOSSELYN was born in Barham, Suffolk, England, and was baptized on Mar. 16, 1633/34. She came to America with her family, in 1635, on the ship Increase. Her family settled first in Hingham, Plymouth, MA, and then moved to Lancaster, Worcester, MA, in 1653.
She married ROGER SUMNER in 1656 in Lancaster, and shortly thereafter moved to Dorchester, Suffolk, MA, where their first two children were born. The records show that ROGER was admitted into the Dorchester Church about 1656, but was dismissed Aug. 26, 1660, "that he might with other Christians at Lancaster join together for the gathering of a Church." He tarried in Lancaster until that town was destroyed by the Indians, when he removed to Milton. He was Deacon of the first Church in Milton, and died there May 26, 1698, age 68. leaving a widow, Mary. The names of three of his children are entered on Dorchester Records, viz. Abigail, Samuel, and Ebenezer - "Genealogy of the Sumner Family", William B. Trask.
ROGER is buried at the Milton Cemetery. His tombstone bears the following inscription:
