Biography

SOLOMON BATES married first, May 1, 1730, Deborah Whiton of Hingham, Plymouth, MA, daughter of John and Mary (Tower) Whiton. Mary Tower was the sister of RACHEL TOWER. Thus, SOLOMON's first marriage was to his first cousin. Then, on Dec. 14, 1732, he married second DEBORAH STUDLEY.

There is some confusion over the name of SOLOMON's wife, as some sources claim Whiton and others claim Studley. The "History of Hingham" includes both names (see addendum) without discussing the number of marriages. The "History and Genealogy of the Families of Chesterfield, Massachusetts", states that there were two marriages, but has no mention of the death of SOLOMON's first wife, Deborah Whiton. The "Tower Genealogy", mentions the marriage to Deborah Whiton, but has not information on her death, or a second marriage by SOLOMON to DEBORAH STUDLEY.
