JOHN EWELL was born in Scituate, Providence, RI, on Mar. 4, 1734. He married first DEBORAH BATES at Hingham on May 15, 1757. DEBORAH died Feb 13, 1801. JOHN married second on July 12, 1801, Jerusha Clapp in Easthampton, Hampshire, MA.
JOHN lost his right arm, perhaps in the Revolutionary War, before removing to Chesterfield, Hampshire, MA. From an old town treasurer's book of Aug. 20, 1824: "You will pay John House, Jr., $11.50 as balance for carrying Mr. Ewell and wife to the west". They removed to New York before 1824.
JOHN died Aug. 15, 1826, and is buried at the Wyoming Village cemetery, just west of Wyoming, Wyoming, NY. He is buried next to his son, James. This area was once referred to as Middlebury. Jurusha returned to Chesterfield to visit friends, and died there in 1833. |
