Biography

TARJEI JONSON was at Eiken from around 1623 until 1654, when his son Jon took over. According to the records at Eiken, TARJEI was still there one more year in 1656. During most of that time, beginning in 1626 up until 1662, he was also paying tax at Væting. At times he also paid tax at Nape, Austjord and Fjalestad.

At Væting, TARJEI was a skysskaffar (a person who provides transportation by horse-drawn wagon) for a time. Around 1647, TARJEI was sharing the farm with Olav Halvorson Ringestoga, who would later marry TARJEI's daughter KRISTI. TARJEI died shortly before the 1664 census. The farm was then divided into two equal sized parts. The new part was called Væting Nedre (lower Væting) and was used by TARJEI's nephew Jon Kletilson. The main farm passed to TARJEI's son Jon.

Jon
N.1586-1599

English translation

It was Tallak's child who got Væting. Jon Tallakson bought Espelia and Kleiv in 1586 from Herbjørn Øysteinson for 20 dalar [money]. It was his uncle [sic, father] Bjørguv who had farmed this out to Bjørn Felle. Jon was the user from the first skattelistene [tax roll] in 1593 and was a much used lagrettemann [juror]. In a testimony from 1595 Vetle Gåstjønn would lay out 40 rd to Sigurd Levordson Haugen. Jon Væting wished to have Greivstad, but would not receive it.

Jon was probably not so old when he died, his widow Asbjørg or Asgjerd had taken the farm already in 1602. According to the 1603 odelsmanntalet [census of allodial owners] Talleiv Valebjørg is said to be owner 1½ tnK at Væting. So most likely he was a guardian for Jon's child.

Tarjei
N.1626-1662

Garden vart då delt i to like store delar mellom sonen Jon og brorsonen Jon Kjetilson.

English translation

In more recent time we find Nikuls and Asbjørn, who probably were tenant farmers. First with Tallak in 1611 we will believe we have a son after Jon dies. The 1615 Matrikkelen [tax rolls] reports Tarjei Væting [sic, Tallak?] as the owner of 2 tnK at the farm while Gunhild Nape had 2 mK.

There is no more to find about Tallak after this. Perhaps he died without heirs. Tarjei Jonson took over Væting. He had the farm from 1626. Tarjei was among the 14 farmers in Fyresdal who in 1636 paid to the "chaplain's subsistance in the north lands". From the 1640's we can see that he paid tax for 3 tnK at Væting and 1 tnK at Eiken. It is therefore likely he used Eiken along with Væting.

Tarjei was a skysskaffar [a person who provides transportation by horse-drawn wagon] several years and over time accumulated more and more land. In this way, he had 1 tnK at Eiken, ½ tnK at Nape, 1 tnK at Austjord, ½ tn 1 mK at Fjalestad and 2 tn 4 mK at Væting in 1657. It was Olav Halvorson Ringestoga who had the rest of the farm, (and) later Åse in Mo. The Olav who was co-user and owner of Væting about 1647, may have been Olav Halvorson. Olav's wife was named Kristi Tarjeisdtr and could have been the daughter of Tarjei.

Not long before the 1664 census Tarjei Jonson died. The farm was then divided into two equal large parts between his son Jon and his nephew Jon Kjetilson.

Gardsnamnet seiast kome frå trenamnet eik. Garden låg truleg øyde til inn på 1600talet.

English translation

The farm name is said to come from the tree name "eik" [oak]. The farm probably lay in shambles until close to the 1600's.

1.       Tarjei
N. 1623-1654
     1656

Ikkje før 1623 finn me ein brukar ved namn Tarjei. Same året måtte han bøte 6 dalar for ikkje å ha etterkome eit forbod.

Midt i 1650åra kom sonen Jon Tarjeison nokre år.

English translation

Not before 1623 we find a user by the name Tarjei. In the first year Eiken was a deserted farm, later a half farm. We learn in 1624 that Tarjei was the owner and had wed himself to his land. The same year he had to pay 6 dalar [money] for not having obeyed an injunction.

Up to the 1640's we find Tarjei Væting with 1 tnK at Eiken, it is most likely that he ran both the farms. In the mid-1650's his son Jon Tarjeison came for several years. He had land at Haugerud, Årak and Trontveit. About 1664 he moved home to Ø.Væting, and we find his brother Åni Tarjeison at Eiken. He also only lived there several years, then a third brother took Eiken. He was Tallak Tarjeison and was thrifty and in different way a very active man.

In 1693 Tallak was sued for having stabbed Alv Rinden with a knife, and after that he was brought before the court.
