Torkjell HOLTAN was mentioned in a 1590 writing, when he and his three sons gave their deserted farm to the Brunkeberg church. The Uddedalen farm was a sub-farm of Holtan. The tax listings show the brothers paying work taxes in 1593.
Torkjell was the original landowner of the LUNDEVALL farm, which is located west of Highway 41 about midway between the villages of Kviteseid and Brunkeberg.
He is the progenitor of four different ancestral lines of
Sigrid Aanundsdotter DRANGSTVEIT. Four of her great-great-great-grandparents are descendants of
Torkjell HOLTAN:
Paternal great-great-great-grandparents: Steinar Aamundsson UTBØEN Anne Olavsdotter MOEN |
Uddedalen hadde lege under Holtan. 1 1592 bli Aanund nemd “Kgl. Maj. Lensmand i Brunkeberg Sogn”. Ho liver i 1619. |
In a matter concerning the church farm Uddedalen, in 1704, Olav Moen from Dalane presents an old writing from 1590: “- that the deserted farm Ulledalen shall be given to the Brunkeberg Church by Aslak and Anund along with lgild Tarckildssønner [Egil Torkjellsson], their good Father” and so forth. Uddedalen had belonged to Holtan. In the listings of work taxes for 1593 one finds Aslak and Egil at Holtan and Aanund at Lundevall. Holtan was from 2 old “huslænde” (homesteads) so probably Aslak and Egil each located on their own share. Egil and Aanund served as sheriff in rotation, one after the other. In 1592 Aanund was named “Kgl. Maj. Lensmand i Brunkeberg Sogn” (Sheriff of Brunkeberg District). Aslak and Egil have heirs of their own, but one can find little about their lives. Aanund is perhaps dead before 1611. By then the kings captain Søffren Halvorsøn makes it known that Egil Holtan, Nikuls Sudbø and “the Danish woman Gudve (Gudue) Lundevall” have boarded 2 soldiers in the war [see Note]. She is alive in 1619. It is very likely that she is the widow of Aanund. In 1626 there was an estate settlement after Aanund died at Holtan where 12 farms and farm parts were divided among 3 sons and 2 or 3 daughters. Both son Såmund and grandson Bjørn were sheriffs at Lundevall. [In] 1671 the farm is listed as a sheriff's farm. At that time Bjørn Lundevall moves out. Later in 1690's we have Tarald Såvisson from Flekstveit joined land shares on the farm and moved in. The descendants of the old family who remained for a century became known by other family names: Syftestad, Øyan and sometimes Langlid. Gunnbjørg Ansteinsdotter who married Bjørn Lundevall, had alodial property at Syftestad. The generation after Bjørn hold on to that. Øyan was from old Lundevall-land, but soon divided from it. Note: The Kalmar War (1611-13) was fought between Denmark-Norway and Sweden over control of the northern Norwegian coast and the Finnmark region. The war was named for the Swedish port of Kalmar which was captured by Denmark in 1611. The following year the Swedish port of Älvsborg (Göteborg) was captured. In the end, Denmark prevailed, and Sweden was forced to pay retribution to get back the port of Älvsborg. |
In an unprinted document from Nov. 23, 1611, Soffrin Halvorson witnesses that Egil Holtan, Nikuls Sudbø and «dannequinde» (the Danish woman) Gudve Lunnervald, have boarded 2 soldiers (soldiers boarded on farms) Tormod Jonsson and Anund Halvorson in his [Soffrin Halvorson] regiment from the war that started in 1611. He witnesses that «for"ne knegtter haffuer skickett sig jnndenn och wdenn lanndtz paa tog och wagtt som villige solldatter vell egner och annstaaer.» This Gudve Lundevall is on some tax rolls and records called Gunnar, but it may have been a mistake. (Jfr. «dannekvinde».) In 1671 Lundevall was known as sheriff's farm, but it was somewhat unclear who was the sheriff.. On the basis of the duties it was Øystein Vigleikson Omtveit, but he had not a thing to do with Lundevall. The farm was at this time run by Gregar Taraldson for 20 years up until 1688. The tax value was reduced to 6 tn. -- and the greatest part is in/outside the district's hands. |
