JOHN JOSSELYN was from Essex County in England. The first record of him was in the parish of Fyfield. He lived there for a year and a half, at least, after his marriage to ALICE NEVELL. The records show he was taxed while living in Fyfield, June 16, 1546.
About 1546-47, they moved to Chignal-Smealy, also in Essex, where the records show JOHN was taxed on Apr. 20, 1547. Chignal-Smealy is about six miles northeast of Fyfield. Sometime between 1551 and 1561, they moved to Roxwell, which lies between Fyfield and Chignal-Smealy, and lived there the rest of their lives.
By a fine dated May 18, 1573, JOHN acquired from William Water the property called Bollinghatch in
Newland hamlet in the parish of Roxwell, consisting of a house, garden, orchard, one hundred acres of
land, ten acres of meadow, ten acres of pasture, and ten acres of woods. This property lies about two
miles northeast of the church at Roxwell and about a half a mile from Good Easter, where a cousin, Rev.
Jeffrey Josselyn lived.
