CHARLES HOAR, father of the American immigrants, was a prominent citizen of Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England. He was a brewer and wool merchant by trade. He was sheriff of Gloucester. He died in 1638 and is thought to have left a substantial estate.
JOANNA and the children came to America about 1642, and she died at Braintree, Norfolk, MA, on Dec. 21, 1661.
Thomas was apprenticed to his father Feb. 2, 1625/26, in Gloucester. He was probably church warden of St. Mary de Crypt, Gloucester, in 1636. He is the only one of the six children to remain in England.
Daniel came to New England with his mother. He was a trader in Boston, where he owned land. He returned to England, and in 1650 was licensed to sell firearms to New England. He made his brother, JOHN, and his nephew, John Hull, his attorneys in New England.
Leonard Hoar graduated at Harvard in 1650, and returned to England in 1653. He studied medicine and
was awarded his M.D. at Cambridge in 1671. He returned to New England and was made president of Harvard
College Dec. 10, 1672.
