WILLIAM HATCH and his wife ANN TILDEN were both from the village of Tenterden and nearby Ashforde, in the borough of Ashford, Kent England. They were married at St. Mildren church in Tenterden. The beautiful church is in the heart of Tenterden, its records dating back to 1180. Its finely carved ceiling dates from the 15th Century. The tower, made of Bethersden marble, housed a fire beacon which warned London of the approach of the Spanish Armada of 1588.
Economically Tenterden was a wool producing area. Tenterden, and its neighboring villages, became an
important center of the broadcloth manufacturing industry.
