Biography

ASLAK VETLESSON is first found at Skafså in 1602, where he is listed on the Matrikkelen [tax rolls]. Two years later he is mentioned as a skysskaffar [a person who provides transportation by horse-drawn wagon], and the following year as a juryman. In 1615, the tax rolls show he had property at Tveiten at Skafså (Søndre Tveiten), Kallåk in Vinje, and Håtveit in Lårdal. The latter was identified as his farm from inscriptions on property at the farm. When ASLAK moved to Søndre Tveiten, his brother ALV took over Skafså.

As early as 1624, ASLAK had income property at a number of farms including, Tveiten, Håtveit, Sending, Kallåk, Groven, and Dyrland in Åmotsdal (Seljord). He was at Søndre Tveiten until about 1638, when his father died. He then returned home to Storåsli. During the following years he had a large share of the estate, but by 1647 he had only 9 tnK. Apparently, by then, the income from the farms was being shared among the three brothers.

According to the Kviteseid Bygdebok, his father-in-law, NIKULS BERGE, held the "Norgarden i Berge" from the late sixteenth century until about 1640. His daughter married ASLAK VETLESSON, and the land passed to ASLAK. Later, ASLAK's son, SÅVI, inherited the land and sold parts of it.

At the end of the 1500's up until 1640 Nikuls Olavsson stayed at «Nordgarden i Berge» in Morgedal and accumulated much land. (See Nikuls). After him came Aslak. Then Vetle Aslaksson Storåslid and his son Såve [Vetlesson] also bought back farms and land parts that Nikuls had owned. Likewise Berge, Kleiv, Undeberg, Byggland and Kallåk, all in Morgedal. It was likely that Aslak Storåslid was married to a daughter or stepdaughter of Nikuls Berge. Of the 5 sons of Aslak, Talleiv went to Utsund, Knut to Vesterdal and Såve [Aslaksson] to Berge. There were descendents of all of them, and at Berge and Vesterdal the family passed down the farm until recent times. Regarding Talleiv Utsund it is made clear in the court register that he was married two times and had three children from one marriage.

Ser me på jordegods, seglmerkje, namn og kor folka budde, finn me ei tilknytting Momrak i Fyresdal. Truleg var folka av same slekt.

English translation

Vetle Aslakson was the largest landowner farmer in Skafså at the time. He had land at 17 farms in 1603 and paid substantial taxes of 4½ rd for it. In 1611 he had a total of 26 tn 1 mK at the farms Storåsli, Berdal, Tingstveit, Veum, Lauvvik, Skafså, Paradis, Skjelbrei, Ø.Åmli, Kleppen, Dale, Dalen, Rui, Bringsverd, Bekkhus, Tveiten and Skåli. He bought ½ markebol at Spokkeli from Uv Jonson of Lårdal in 1603 and got a mortgage on S.Skåli from Tallak Einarson Skåli the year after for 20 rd. At the same time he also owned at Gausbu, Floten in Mo, Kvålo, Vik, N.Åmli, Brokka, Håtveit, Spokkeli and Vadde and probably operated an extensive business in farms.

The 1624 Odelsjordeboka [allodial land book] shows that he had 13 tnK then. His sons got land property ownership from around 1618, so probate was probably held after the wife of Vetle died in the time between 1615 and 1618. She was a sister of Siver (Sigurd) Rinden in Fyresdal and was named Sigrid Bendiksdtr Spokkeli.

Vetle himself was a stepson of Eivind Bilstad (Storåsli 2?). By means of land property, sealmarks, names and where the people lived, we find a connection to Momrak in Fyresdal. The people were probably from the same family.

Aslak døydde ein gong i 1650åra.

English translation

Aslak Vetleson Storåsli came home from S.Tveiten 2 after his father died around 1638. The first years he held a large part of the land property after his father died, but from about 1647 he had only 9 tnK to get along on. This reinforces that there were three brothers to divide the inheritance. Aslak died sometime in the 1650's. This started some processes regarding distribution of the farm. These ended in 1865 [sic 1665?] with an agreement and Storåsli was divided into two parts.

Many years later there was a lawsuit concerning Gausbu. Then more children were counted after Aslak died. Based on the ages of the children he must have been married two times.

Aslak Vetleson Storåslid 3a used S.Tveiten until his father died around 1638. Before that he probably lived at Skafså 2 until around 1615.

In 1620 Aslak sued Tov «Ringestu» of Nesland for 1 markebol at Groven which he had purchased from Tor Byrte (Floten 1) in 1604. Tov believed his father-in-law had purchased the land before that time, but had no proof.

In 1624 the property of Aslak was in Tveiten, Håtveit, Sending, Kallåk, Groven and Dyrland in Åmotsdal. It was about 9 tnK. After his father died, Aslak moved home to Storåslid 4.

Garden hadde ikkje brukarar i dei eldste skattelistene. Frå 1602 finn me Aslak V. nemnt på garden.

English translation

The farm had no users in the oldest tax lists. From 1602 we find Aslak V. mentioned at the farm. He was a skysskaffar [a person who provides transportation by horse-drawn wagon] in 1604 and juryman in 1605. The 1615 Matrikkelen [tax roll] shows that he had 2 tnK at Tveiten in Skafså, 1½ tnK at Kallåk in Vinje and 2 mK at Håtveit in Lårdal, the last «innskreven hos Oluf Omlis gods» [inscribed on property at Oluf Omli's place]. It seems obvious that it was Aslak Vetleson Storåsli 3a who lived here these years. Later he moved to S.Tveiten 2 and his brother Alv Vetleson Storåsli 3c took over Skafså. Already in 1615 Alv Skafså had with his sister-in-law 4 mK at Dale in Vrådal. Later he had 1 tnK at Skafså, 1 tn 4 mK at Tveiten, 1 tnK at Lauvvik, 4½ mK at Opsund and 1 tnK at Skræi. This is the same land that Alv N.Tveiten 1 had in 1624.

Alv used first both N.Tveiten 1 and Ø.Åmli 3. After he came to Skafså, he still had N.Tveiten, but around 1623 he moved from Skafså and after that only used N.Tveiten 1.
