Biography
SAMUEL WAKEMAN was a resident at Harvard College for a time but left in 1655 without graduating on
account of dissatisfaction with the authorities. He went to New Haven, New Haven, CT, where he married
HANNAH GOODYEAR on Aug. 28, 1656.
Their first child was born in New Haven, CT. He then moved to Poquonnock (or Fairfield), Connecticut
in 1663. HANNAH married second, Nathaniel Burr, and they had two children, John (b. 1674) and Daniel (b. 1677).
In September, 1692, "ANN" WAKEMAN testified in the witchcraft trials of New Haven. And her name also
appears as "ANN" in the probate records of 1721. During these times, the names "Ann" and "Hannah" were
used interchangeably. And there is no evidence that SAMUEL had more than one wife.
SAMUEL is listed on the obelisk monument in the ancient burying ground at the Center Church in
Hartford, commemorating the founders of Hartford. The monument was erected in 1986 by the Descendants of
the Founders of Hartford on the 350th anniversary of the city, replacing an older stone.

John Wakeman
John and Martha Wakeman are the gr-gr-gr-grandparents of Sarah Rosetta Wakeman, who fought in the civil war using the alias Lyons Wakeman. Several books were written about her. She fought in the war, not for patriotic reasons, but rather simply because she could make more money as a soldier than at other jobs.
