EDWARD GRISWOLD was baptised at Wootton Wawen parish in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, England on July 26, 1607. EDWARD and his brother Matthew emigrated to the colonies in 1639, landing at Dorchester, MA, and later that year settling in Windsor, Hartford, CT. In 1646, Matthew married Anna Wolcott and moved to Old Saybrook, CT.

In 1649, EDWARD moved from Windsor, CT, to Poquonock, a short distance to the north.

MARGARET died Aug. 23, 1670, and is buried at the Congregational cemetery at Clinton, CT, her gravestone marked "M.G. 1670" being the oldest monument.

EDWARD married second, 1673, Sarah Bemis, widow of James Bemis, constable of New London, CT. She was the daughter of John and Rebecca (Bemis) Diamond.

A historic marker in Killingworth reads, "In 1663, the General Court in Hartford founded the plantation of Hammonasset, encompassing the present- day towns of Killingworth and Clinton, CT. The Court named the town Kenilworth in 1667 after the birthplace in England of Edward Griswold, one of the first settlers."

According to the Barbour Genealogy, EDWARD was a prominent character in early Connecticut history. He was a member of the Colonial Legislature, and was frequently commissioner. He died in Killingworth, CT in 1691, aged 84 years.
