In 1647, JAMES DAVIS was appointed to a committee to study the need for a toll bridge across the Merrimack River, and determine what the toll should be. The results of the study are not known, but a bridge was not built for nearly a century and a half (1794).
JAMES was admitted freeman of Haverhill, Essex, MA, in 1666, was awarded 20 acres of "accommendation" land in 1667, and gave the Oath of Allegiance and Fidelity in 1677.
JAMES died Jul. 18, 1694, at Haverhill. His will, dated the same day, mentions a second wife, Mary. The will was proved Aug. 2, 1694. The will shows that Mary had her own property when she married JAMES. Mary Davis, age about 79, was received to West Newbury church, Dec. 2, 1716.
ANNE, the mother of ELIZABETH EATON, is not Anne Crossman, as is often claimed.
