MARY SMITH was the niece of THOMAS HINCKLEY, the last governor of Plymouth Colony. In 1683, JOHN DUNHAM and MARY sued Joseph Howland for two year's service of MARY, before their marriage. Her maiden name was used in the suit. He was not an original proprietor of Barnstable, Barnstable, MA, as he bought land of Thomas Bowman, Jr., who moved to Falmouth, Feb. 18, 1685.
Three acres of land were laid out to him; bounded on the east by Goodspeed's old castway, that goeth from Ebenezer Goodspeed's house to the place where the old house of the said Goodspeed was by the Salt Marsh; bounded on the south and west by cove and river; and west by the Commons.
On Apr. 10, 1689, thirty acres, which had been granted to him several years previous was laid out to him at Oysterhead River; bounded west by Herring River; south by John Leedsour's marsh; and east by John Goodspeed's castway.
He was first a member of the church at Plymouth, afterward at Barnstable. In 1692, he was deputy in
General Court. After his death, Jan. 2, 1698, his wife MARY moved to Mansfield, Tolland, CT, and opened
a public house.
