JOHN WHEELER was christened at St. Edmunds parish in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. The parish register of St. Edmund includes a marriage record for "John Whelyer & Agnes Yeoman" on 1 Dec. 1611. In those days, Agnes and Ann were used interchangeably. He came to America on the "Mary and John," sailing on Mar. 24, 1634. His name was spelled Wheyler on the manifest. He came with his wife and six children, leaving four grown children in England. He spent the first winter in Ipswich, Essex, MA, where he was said to be a barber. He then moved to Salisbury, MA, where he was one of the original settlers. He owned land there until as late as 1666. JOHN WHEELER of Newbury, Essex, MA, "considering my old age and my owne weakness," made his will, Mar. 28, 1668. He mentions all of his children, plus ANNE CHASE, George's wife Susanna. The will was proved Oct. 11, 1670. |
