Biography

JOHN THAYER was born at Thornbury, Gloucester, England, and baptized at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, on May 6, 1561. At one time it was thought that his birthdate was Feb. 28, 1563/64. This mistake was corrected when it was found the the February date was actually for Johanes Tayler of the same Parish. These corrections were documented in The American Genealogist.

The marriage of JOHN and JOAN LAWRENCE is recorded in the St. Mary Parish records, "August 3, 1589 - John Tawier to Joan Lawrence." The church baptism records for JOHN show, "Johanes Tawier; Godfathers: Johanes Roocs, Richardus Baker; Godmother: Margaretta Wallis."

The will of JOHN mentions three daughters, Alice, Agnes and CICELYE TAYER.

The Parish records show that Als (Alice) Hilpe was the Godmother of CICELY TAYER (NEHGR Vol. 60, p.284). This invites the question, "Is Cicely Hilpe the mother of JOAN LAWRENCE?"

The parish records have a number of entries for the families of Thomas and Richard Tayer. These two brothers are known to have emigrated from Thornbury to Braintree, Norfolk, MA, about 1640. No connection has ever been found between these two individuals and JOHN THAYER.
