PHILIP SMITH was baptized Apr. 1, 1565 at Erwarton, Suffolk, England. ANN GRYMWADE was baptized Nov. 30, 1570 at Rattlesden, Suffolk, England. They married June 1, 1590.

After marriage they lived in Erwarton for about ten years where five of their nine children were baptized. Then then probably moved to nearby Harkstead, Suffolk, England. There are no parish records from Harkstead prior to 1653, but a will of Ann's cousin, Robert Grymwade, described her as living in Harkstead. The two parishes are just two miles apart, both a little north of the River Stour.

After Harkstead, PHILIP and ANN moved to Whatfield, Suffolk, England. It was in Whatfield, Where their daughter ELIZABETH SMITH married SAMUEL SMITH in 1624. PHILIP and ANN are both buried in Whatfield.

PHILIP's nuncupative will was made orally just days befoe he died. It was prepared by witnesses after his death and dated March 1630/31. The will was proved July 21, 1631. The will of ANN was also nuncupative, dated just days after her death. She died March 24, 1638/39. The will was dated April 5, 1639 and proved July 24, 1639.
