CLEMENT BATES (probably BATE in England) at age 40, and his wife Ann, the same age, and five children embarked from London on Apr. 6, 1635, for New England in the ship Elizabeth, of which William Stagg was master. They came to Hingham about the same time as Rev. Peter Hobart and his followers. CLEMENT received a grant of five acres on Town (South) Street.
The ancestors of CLEMENT BATE are traceable for five generations in England:
(18) THOMAS BATE of Lydd, Parish of All Hallows, d. in 1485 (17) JOHN BATE, d. in 1522 at Lydd (16) ANDREW BATE, d. in 1533 at Lydd (15) JOHN BATE, d. in 1580 at Lydd (14) JAMES BATE, d. in 1614 at Lydd, father of CLEMENT, Edward, and James Bates. |
