HENRY WOODWARD was baptized on Mar. 22, 1606/07 in Childwell, Lancashire, England.
He came to America from Much Worten, Lancster, England, in the summer of 1635, on the ship James, sailed by Capt. Taylor. He was accompanied by Rev. Richard Mather's company. The James landed at Dorchester, Suffolk, MA, on Aug. 16, 1635. HENRY was a physician and was licensed to sell wines and liquors. He settled in Dorchester, MA, and was living there in 1639. He moved to Northampton, Hampshire, MA, in 1659. He and his family were early members of the church in Dorchester, and were among the founders of the first church in Northampton. He was one of the "seven pillars" of this church.
He married ELIZABETH on Sep. 4, 1638. She was born about 1618 in Dorchester, Suffolk, MA. It is not known with certainty if ELIZABETH's maiden name was MATHER, but the most widely accepted belief is that she was the daughter of THOMAS MATHER and MARGERITE ABRAMS, and the sister of Rev. Richard Mather, who came on the James, the same ship that brought HENRY WOODWARD.
HENRY died in Northampton, Hampshire, MA, Apr. 7, 1685. He was killed by lightning at his grist mill. Of her husband, ELIZABETH said, "he has been a dutiful and well carriaged spouse to me all my life."
ELIZABETH died Aug. 13, 1690.
