DANIEL DOANE moved to Eastham, Barnstable, MA, with his father in 1645, and settled in that part of town known as East Orleans. He was a Selectman each year from 1691 to 1696, Juryman 1676, 1686, 1687, and 1689. He was Surveyor of Highways in 1667, 1673, 1699, 1700 and 1704, and was Deacon of the First Church for many years. The parentage of DANIEL's wife is not known with certainty. Josiah Paine, town clerk and historian of Harwich, Barnstable, MA, wrote that Nicholas and Constance Snow had a daughter named for her mother. who was the first wife of Daniel Doane of Eastham. This is accepted by some genealogists as evidence that Constance of this biography is a descendant of Stephen Hopkins, the Mayflower passenger. The Mayflower Society, in its "silver books", cites the statements by Josiah Paine, but doesn't consider that as proof of lineage to Stephen Hopkins. DANIEL married second after 1682, Hepsibah Cole, widow of George Crispe. |
