MOSES DIMON was born, May 2, 1638, in Fairfield, Fairfield, CT. He married ABIGAIL WARD in Fairfield on May 2, 1670, his 32nd birthday. In that same year he purchased from John Purdy, son of Francis Purdy of Westchester, NY, the Purdy Homestead on Frost Square. The deed of sale describes the property as "one dwelling house and homelot, in quantity three acres and three quarters, bounded on the SE with the highway, SW with the land of John Banks, on the NW with highway, and on the NE with Jacob Gray and Thomas Barlow's children.
This homestead remained in the family almost 200 years. The land passed to son MOSES, then to Ebenezer and to Ebenzer's son David. British soldiers burned the house in 1779, during an expedition which burned most of Fairfield. After the war, David's son, another Ebenezer, rebuilt the house. After Ebenezer died in 1841 and his widow Mary Hinman Dimon died in 1852, their grandson Arthur Dimon Osborn sold the first identifiable Dimon homestead out of the family.
In addition to his homestead, MOSES accumulated other lands in Fairfield. In January 1670/71, the town granted him building lots comprising 6-3/4 acres, pasture land comprising 5-1/4 acres, and a long lot comprising 10-1/4 rods. Also, in 1671, MOSES shared with other property owners a division and distribution of Fairfield common lands. His allotted portion totalled 292 acres.
MOSES married ABIGAIL WARD in Fairfield on May 2, 1670. ABIGAIL was the daughter of ANDREW WARD, one one of Fairfield's most prominent and influential men.
MOSES died just prior to April 15, 1684, when his property was inventoried. His will provided for the disposition of his property among his wife, son, and three daughters. His property was appraised at £793.
As was common in colonial society, ABIGAIL did not long remain a widow. She married second, Edward Howard, on June 2, 1685. ABIGAIL died in Fairfield on July 23, 1718.
Abigail married Samuel Smedley, son of Samuel and Hanah Wheeler Smedley. He was orphaned at an early age and apparently raised by Wheeler relatives in Fairfield. After marrying they settled in a small community just east of Fairfield known as Stratfield (now Bridgeport). After Abigail died, Samuel married second, Mrs. Martha (Turney) Treadwell, on Feb. 14, 1720/21.
Strong circumstantial evidence indicates that Hester (or Esther) was the same as the one who married Samuel Rowland in 1702. he was later captain of the Fairfield militia. Hester died in Fairfield on Sep. 11, 1744, and she is buried at the Old Fairfield Burying Ground.
After Hester's death Samuel married Mrs. Sarah (Sherman) Strong Barlow.
