THOMAS DEWEY emigrated from Sandwich, Kent, England, as one of the early settlers under Governor Winthrop and Rev. John Warham. There were twelve vessels which arrived after the "Mary and John", up to as late as July 6, 1630. Some think that THOMAS came on the "Lyon", which sailed from Bristol, Gloucestershire, England, in February, and arrived in Salem, Essex, MA, in the spring.
The first evidence of THOMAS in New England is as a witness to a will written by John Russell, sometime prior to Aug. 26, 1633, the date John Russell died. Rev. John Warham and Thomas and John Moore also acted as witnesses on that will. THOMAS testified on Sep. 3, 1633, regarding that will.
In 1634, THOMAS was declared a Freeman, and the following year joined a party of fifty-five settlers led by Rev. Warham, and travelled to the town of Windsor, Hartford, CT, and there assisted in starting a new settlement. He is listed among the earliest settlers of Windsor. He had a house on Main Street next to the river and was a farmer by trade and later became a Deputy of the Court.
Living eight houses down the street was Joseph Clark and his wife FRANCES, and their daughter Mary. In 1638, after the death of Joseph Clark, THOMAS married his widow, and they had five children of their own.
THOMAS died on Apr. 27, 1648, at Westfield. An inventory of his estate was taken on May 19, 1648.
FRANCES then married George Phelps. In 1670 they moved to Westfield, Hampden, MA.
