SAMUEL LINCOLN was born Mar. 16, 1658, in Taunton, Bristol, MA. In September, 1682, the County Court records of New London, New London, CT, state that "Samuel Linkhorns of Taunton and Sarah Roice of Norwich are adjudged to pay a fine of five pounds, having been legally convicted of fornication before marriage." This rather undignified incident helps first place SAMUEL in Connecticut in 1682.
The first mention of SAMUEL LINKON (the spelling used in Windham) in Larned's book was in a list prepared in conjunction with a town meeting, May 30, 1693. Because so many settlers had arrived during the winter, a list was established to identify admitted and approved inhabitants.
The Norwich Land Records (1:132) record eighteen acres of pasture land belonging to Samuel Lincoln of Windham, Connecticut, more or less at Yantick (Norwich) abutting south on land of Hugh Calkin, west on land of Thomas Post and Hugh Calkin, north and east on commons. Part of the land was his father-in-law Royce's pasture lot and part a grant from the town, this parcel delivered to him as part of his mother- in-law Royce as appears upon the record entered Jan. 21, 1694/95.
SAMUEL is further connected with Sarah Royce, when he is mentioned in the distribution of the estate of Jonathan Royce, Sep. 22, 1690: "Samuel Linkon received five pounds." Lydia is mentioned in the distribution of the estate of her grandfather THOMAS LINCOLN of Taunton, 1694, in which he distributes his property to his surviving children: "to Thomas, his son, he gave 5 parcels of land which he may sell if needed for his maintenance provided that Thomas cause to be payable to Lidiah, daughter of THOMAS, Sr's son, SAMUEL, 50 shillings when she shall arrive at the age of 18 years." (Bristol County Deeds, 2:260). The same provision is requested for "Lidiah" in the deed of land to Jonah, son of THOMAS, Sr.
Sarah Royce must have died soon after the birth of Lydia and before June 2, 1692, when SAMUEL married ELIZABETH JACOBS (Windham Vital Records, A-24). Seven children were born to them. When ELIZABETH died, around 1727, SAMUEL married, for the third time, EXPERIENCE LANPHEAR, widow of SHADRACH LANPHEAR, and mother of his daughter-in-law, PRUDENCE LANPHEAR.
On May 9, 1732, SAMUEL made his will which was probated at Windham on Mar. 3, 1737/38. His son THOMAS
was named as executor. SAMUEL acknowledges in the will, a previous gift of three parcels of land to
THOMAS.
