Some Churches in Dalsland

The church was built of stone in 1796-1799 and dedicated in 1800. The altarpiece was added in 1914 from a design by Hj Tessing. The altar painting depicts Jesus walking on water. A baptismal font of sandstone dates from the 1200's. The font basin with a decorative base representing the Annunciation is a Nuremberg-work dating from the end of the 1400's. In the choir loft hang Baron Axel Erik Roos' sword and spurs. [Note: In the 1980's the sword and spurs were stolen and never returned.]

Northeast of the present church was Gestad's oldest church, dating from the latter half of the 1200's. In 1919 two memorial stones were erected here, one in memory of the old church and cemetery, and the other in memory of Baron Axel Erik Roos.

Note from compiler

Axel Erik Roos was a trusted officer in the Swedish army of Charles XII of Sweden. Several quick promotions advanced him from second lieutenant to lieutenant general. At the skirmish at Bender [in present day Moldova], Roos saved the king's life three times in one day, including protecting the king with his own body.
