Land is identified in western New York, by Ranges, Townships and Lots. The Townships can be of varying sizes, but in Ontario County most are "about" 36 square miles. But rather than 36 Sections within a Township, there are Lots. And, it seems each Township decides how they will designate those Lots. In the Township of Naples, there are 150 Lots.
The Township of Naples numbering convention uses the term, Range (but not the same Range, as used to measure from the meridian lines). The Township was divided into "columns", identified as Range. The eastern most column was called the 1st Range. The northern most Lot in each Range was Lot 1. Our Lincolns had land in Lot 1 of the 4th Range. That lot was adjacent to Lots 1 and 10 in South Bristol.
A graphical layout would look like this ...
150 Lots 1 1 1 1 1 ............. 1 1 1 1 2 2 2 2 2 ............. 2 2 2 2 . . . . . ............. . . . . . . . . . ............. . . . . 9 9 9 9 9 ............. 9 9 9 9 10 10 10 10 10 ............. 10 10 10 10 __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ "range" 15th 14th 13th 12th 11th ............ 4th 3rd 2nd 1st
Range 4, Lot 1 is located at or near Seamans Corner Cemetry just south of the Naples-South Bristol township line.
