Lincoln (and Allied) Family Books

1. Stephen Lincoln of Oakham, Massachusetts ... , by John E. Morris, 1895, 109 pp. .........   (Fred 02/08/2000)

  STEPHEN6 LINCOLN is a 6th generation descendant of THOMAS1 ("the miller") ... (Stephen6, Nathaniel5, Nathaniel4, Thomas3, Thomas2, Thomas1 "the miller")

There is, also, some information on Allied Families, and some descendants of siblings.

The book I borrowed was VERY OLD, and had been donated to the NEHGS in 1895 by the author. Inside it was an original newspaper clipping from the February 12, 1909, edition of the Lowell, MA, paper ... commemorating Abraham Lincoln on his 100th birthday.

Oakham, MA, is in Worcester County, immediately north of Windham County, CT. I found no mention of Windham County, nor any of the "key" counties in NY.

I made several updates to the "Lincoln Names" page ... for descendants of Nathaniel4.

2. History of the Lincoln Family, An Account of the Descendants of Samuel Lincoln of Hingham, Massachusetts, 1637-1920, by Waldo Lincoln, 1923, 718 pp. .........   (Fred 03/08/2000)

This book covers up to ten generations of descendants of SAMUEL LINCOLN ("the weaver"). None of these Lincolns migrated to Windham County, CT, nor did many go to New York. Most that left New England went to New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

This is the line of President ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

3. The Descendants of Cornet Robert Stetson of Scituate, Massachusetts, 1634 by Oscar Frank Stetson, 1933, 158 pp. .........   (Fred 07/03/2000)

This book covers up to six generations of descendants of Cornet SAMUEL STETSON. 7 names are given for children of DESIRE STETSON and NATHANIEL SOUTHWORTH. RUTH is not included. Gurley is included (without a birthdate) with the comment, "From the Mansfield records it does not appear that Gurley was of this family." The source is given as the Mansfield V.R.

But, since we know that RUTH and Gurley are not in the town birth records, Gurley's name must have come from some other source. It could have come from church records, which we know exist. And, the absence of RUTH's name could be the result of a copying error. The birthdate for Samuel Stetson (given as Aug 3, 1786) seems to be a combination of his correct date (Aug 3, 1783) and RUTH's year (1786).

Of the seven children, the book says, "Some of these children settled in Cooperstown, NY, and vicinity. Also, the book says, that Timothy Stetson (DESIRE's brother), "removed with his wife and 11 children to Otsegotown (Pittsfield) in 1789."
