THOMAS HOOKER emigrated to Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1633.
At New Towne (now Cambridge) he became the pastor of a
company of Puritans (called Mr. Hooker's Company), who had
arrived from England the previous year. In 1636 he led a
group to Connecticut, where they founded Hartford.
In 1638 he preached a sermon that led to the adoption of the
Fundamental Orders, the first written constitution in the
world that led to the creation of a government. He is sometimes
called "the father of American Democracy".
He is buried at the Ancient Burying Ground
at the Center Church Cemetery in downtown Hartford, CT.
This statue is located two blocks north at the Old State House.
With him is his gr-gr-gr-gr-gr-gr-gr-gr-gr-gr-granddaughter,
Lindsey Peterson.
