Biography

THOMAS1 WARD of Homersfield, Suffolk, married the daughter of JOHN HARE, who in turn was the son of NICHOLAS HARE.

RICHARD2 WARD was the son of THOMAS1 WARD. RICHARD2 married ANN GUNVILLE, the daughter of Sir RICHARD GUNVILLE of Gorleston, Suffolk. RICHARD2 and ANN had sons named Henry, Richard, Ralph, and ANDREW3 [from Andrew Ward and His Ancestors 1597-1910, George K. Ward].

From The History and Antiquities of the County of Suffolk: Volume I, we learn of Gorleston. The Manor of Bacon in Gorleston was held by the Crown until Henry VIII (1509-1547). In the first of Edward VI (1547-1553), RICHARD GUNVILLE Esq. was lord of Bacon's, with whose descendants it remained until Queen Elizabeth (1558-1603). After the widow (Alice) of Henry Gunville died in 1580, RICHARD2 WARD held the manor in right of ANN (GUNVILLE) his wife, sister of aforesaid Henry Gunville. In the forty-fourth of Elizabeth (1602) Henry Ward was lord. [Note: Henry Ward was the son of ANN GUNVILLE and brother of ANDREW3 WARD (father of the immigrant ANDREW4).]

Thus, some kind of connection appears to exist between these families, and if proven, the ancestors of the immigrant ANDREW4 WARD appear to be substantial families from Suffolk with considerable holdings.
