Biography

The name of the Væting farm is said to be derived from the words vatr or vatn meaning lake or water. It is believed the name of the Hærstad farm comes from the man's name Hedinn.

BJØRGUV VÆTING's youngest daughter Ingelev and her husband Jakob "Gronningen" had Væting, but because of a disagreement between them, the king took over the farm. In 1557 Torbjørn Torjusson and his wife Helga Bjørguvsdtr (sister of Ingelev) bought the farm back, paying gold to her brothers (TALLAK and Salomon). This gave them Væting free and clear. In 1564, Ingelev sued Torbjørn and Helga for the land and it was agreed that Torbjørn would pay Ingelev land rent for the rest of her life.

Troubles continued and it appears that Torbjørn stabbed his wife. There were then claims, by Helga, of bribes and collusion between Torbjørn and the authorities. Later Helga sued GUNLEIK LEVORDSON for taking the farm.

BJØRGUV's daughter married LEVORD LEVORDSON and they lived at Væting. Their son GUNLEIK LEVORDSON married GRO GUNLEIKSDOTTER and settled at Hærstad. GUNLEIK was the first user at Hærstad. He was lagrettemann [sheriff] there. He later had land at Midtbø in Nissedal, Dale in Vrådal, and Tortveit in Fyresdal.

GUNLEIK owned land in 1603, but died not long after that. Probate for his wife GRO was not held until 1668, but it is believed that she had been deceased for many years by then. GUNLEIK and GRO had five daughters and GRO outlived them all.

English translation

From old times the name may have been Vætingr, taken from vatr or vatn [lake or water]. This indicates that the land was swampy and marshy.

Kor Levord Levordson frå saka i 1668 budde, veit me ikkje.

English translation

As late as 1668 a lawsuit came up in court in Fyresdal. It was Talleiv Metveit, Olav Landsverk, Gunleik Hærstad, Orm Fardal Nøra and Bjørguv Kleivi who believed they had not received full inheritance after the grandmother of their "mother" died, who was called Gunhild Helgesdtr. After so long a time it is difficult to place Gunhild in time, but early 1500's might be likely. The allodial property of Gunhild was 12 markebol at Væting and 4 tnK at Metveit with Landsverk and Slåttedalen. The opposition was Jon Nordbø and Anstein Tveitane from Nissedal and Olav Bergland and Jon Væting.

Jon Nordbø and the others replied that they wanted to prove that the heirs after Levord Levordson died had sold their inheritance. The lawsuit was postponed, and we hear no more about it.

We find descendants after both these brothers died in the before mentioned lawsuit from 1668. Levord Levordson may have been married to one sister, and the last sister may have been grandmother [Bjørguv's mother] of the other. In this manner Gunhild Helgesdtr may have been the mother of Bjørguv or his wife except that we can see almost nothing about that.

From the lawsuit in 1668, where Levord Levordson lived, we do not know. It is believed that he probably was married to a daughter of Bjørguv Væting and had with her two sons we know of. A Levord Levordson was lagrettemann [sheriff] of Valebjørg in 1578.

English translation

The name [HÆRSTAD] is interpreted from the man's name Hedinn, and the farm is regarded as one of the oldest in Fyresdal.

1.       Gunleik
N. 1587-1603

Ho må då ha vore død i mange år, men skiftet fortel at ho vart utgamal og overlevde alle døtrene sine.

Dette vert over 16 tnK!

English translation

The first user we find at the farm was Gunleik Levordson. In 1587 he got a mortgage on ¼ of Midtbø in Nissedal from Olav Gunnarson for 19 dalar [money]. At that time he was used a great deal as a lagrettemann [sheriff]. A 1601 document tells that Gunleik received 8 markebol at Dale in Vrådal from Olvar Gunnuvson Lauvvik in return for 4½ markebol at S.Lauvvik and 28 dalar [money].

In 1603 he was owner of 3 tnK at Hærstad and 3 tnK at Tortveit, but died not long after. We cannot determine anything other than he must have been married to Gro Gunleiksdtr whose probate was held as late as 1669. She must have then been dead for many years, but the probate tells that she was aged and outlived all her daughters. There was 2 tnK skyldgods [assessed land value] after she died and a debt of 140 rd. There was no personal property since she was old and frail and lived for a long time at her grandchild's home.

After Gunleik died, his widow perhaps was married again to Tarald or Halvor who had the farm a while. She is said to have been married to sheriff Rolv Gjermundson of Døli 6 in Skafså, but rather it was a daughter who was married to him. In 1615 collected land property was divided between a son-in-law and a daughter who was not married. Gunleik may have owned 1 tn 4 mK at Dale in Vrådal, 4 tnK at Oppsund in Nissedal(?), 4 mK at Lie and 2 tnK at N.Tveiten in Skafså in addition to the land at Hærstad, Songedal and Tortveit. This is over 16 tnK!
