MATTHEW SHERWOOD as born about 1643/44 in Concord, Middlesex, MA. He later removed to Stratfield, Fairfield, CT, where he was ensign of the Fairfield County troops in August, 1673. He was later promoted to Captain. He was a member of the Fairfield trainband by October, 1685, and was Lieutenant of the trainband by April, 1690.
He was first married to Sarah Turney, daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Odell) Turney. He married second
MARY FITCH. There is much confusion about this MARY FITCH. She is often identified as the mother of
MATTHEW rather than his wife. But there is no evidence that she is the MARY that was married to his
father THOMAS SHERWOOD.
