Biography

SVEIN MIKKELSON was from Nordlien in Vinje. As a young man he farmed at both Paradis in Vinje and Skredtveit in Telemark. He was known to be at Skredtveit as early as 1641. When his father died, SVEIN got ownership of 2½ tnK in Nordlien and 1 tnK in Skredtveit. The 1647 Matrikkelen [tax rolls] show that SVEIN and Gunnar Åse each had half of Skredtveit. Gunnar was the son-in-law of TARJEI ORMSON.

SVEIN had a sister, Gunhild Sveinsdotter, who was married to Såvi and had a daughter, Sigrid Såvisdotter, who was married to Kjetil Talleivson Kolkjon. Sigrid inherited Skredtveit, in 1665, after her grandmother died. SVEIN got some of the inheritance at Skredtveit also.

SVEIN was married to ASGJERD ALVSDOTTER and inherited Paradis with her. They also got land at Nordre Tveiten which they farmed for a time. Her family was from Berge in Kviteseid.

After SVEIN and ASGJERD died, Skredtveit was passed on to their daughter GUNHILD SVEINSDOTTER and her husband TROND SONDRESON.

6.      Svein
N. 1641-1667

Først i 1641 finn me ein mann me kjenner på garden.

Matrikkelen 1647 syner at Svein Skredtveit og Gunnar Åse åtte halve garden kvar.

Denne kom for retten i 1686.

English translation

Early in 1641 we find a man we recognize at the farm. His name was Svein Mikkelson (1616-Sk.1669) and he was from Nordlien in Vinje. He was a son of Mikkel Sveinson Lien and farmed Paradis in Vinje simultaneously with Skredtveit. Perhaps Mikkel lived also at Skredtveit for a time? A Mikkel Skredtveit was a lagrettemann [juror] in 1627. Probate after Mikkel Sveinson Nordlien died was held in 1664. His land ownership was 2½ tnK in Nordlien and 1 tnK in Skredtveit. Land in Homme in Treungen and Steinstad in Setesdalen was sold.

From a lawsuit from 1665 we see that Svein Skredtveit had a sister, Gunhild Sveinsdtr, who was married to Såvi and had a daughter, Sigrid Såvisdtr, married to Kjetil Talleivson Kolkjøn. Sigrid inherited Skredtveit after her father's mother died and Svein got Nordlien.

Svein Mikkelson got some of the inheritance at Skredtveit also. He sold the inheritance of his wife, ½ tnK in Hærstad in Fyresdal, to Rolv Gunleikson for 60 rd. Kjetil Kolkjøn got this money, as then he lived at Tveiten (in exchange) for his own inheritance of Skredtveit. Kjetil also got a horse from the widow Asgjerd in 1668.

Svein was married to Asgjerd Alvsdtr N.Tveiten 1c in Skafså and inherited Paradis with her. They also got land in N.Tveiten 4 which they used for some years. In 1652 it was a Talleiv Tveiten of Skafså who sued (Auvor?) Lunderhall about a probate at Tveit in Skafså and Rygnestad in Setesdalen. Talleiv Tveit was homeless when Svein Skredtveit had ordered him from the farm.

Svein was a church warden in Mo as early as 1639.

The 1647 matrikkelen [tax rolls] show that Svein Skredtveit and Gunnar Åse had half the farm each. Gunnar got his own part from his father-in-law Tarjei Ringestoga.

There was a disagreement about the inheritance after Svein and Asgjerd died. This came from the rights in 1686. It was said that Svein had purchased the farm from their heirs after Gunnar Åse and Gunleik Bakken died in Flatdal. He had no allodial rights, but probably Asgjerd had. Probate after his father died indicates something else, it may be that it was only mortgaged property he was left with. Svein had himself purchased lease rights to the farm in 1650. In 1667, Svein got Tovsland in Grungedal from Paul Druchen in return for S.Lauvvik. After he died, probate was held in 1669. They owned then 2½ tnK in Lien, 2 tnK in Tovsland, 1½ mK in Mosli, 2 tnK in Skredtveit and 1 tn 1 mK in Paradis.

     1695-1707

Saka i 1686 syner at Trond Sondreson hadde odel i Skredtveit.

Her var fleire hundre rd i uteståande krav, sylv for over 70 rd, reiskapar og koparkjelar.

English translation

It was Trond Sondreson Svalastoga (ca.1645-Sk.1709) from Vinje who got to use Skredtveit after Svein died. He was married to Gunhild Sveinsdtr Skredtveit 6d and inherited the farm with her. By means of the first probate they received 1 tnK in the farm and ½ tn 2 notK in Paradis. Bjug Snarteland complained at the probate in 1686 and it was resolved in this manner that Trond got all of Skredtveit in return for paying Bjug 70 rd. Trond had supported his mother-in-law Asgjerd until she died. In addition, he had paid 260 rd in debt after Svein died.

The lawsuit in 1686 shows that Trond Sondreson had allodial property in Skredtveit. He was a descendent of Olav Halvorson Moghus in Fyresdal who bought 2 markebol of the farm of Halvor Torjusson. The document does not have any date of the report, but is probably from around 1600.

Trond was the church guardian in Mo 1676 to 1678. He bought in 1676 one-fourth of the farm from Åvold Ringestoga and his siblings, they were children of Gunnar Åse.

There was a probate held after Gunhild Sveinsdtr died in 1693. The property was 2 tnK in Skredtveit, 2 tn 1 mK in Edland with Gjesløs, 1/2 tnK in Tveiten in Grungedal, 1/2 tnK in Everland in Grungedal and 1 tnK in Rui in Grundedal. There were several hundred rd in outstanding claims, silver for over 70 rd, equipment and copper kettles. All 900 rd was in addition to the land property and there was almost no debt. An especially wealthy estate.

His son Odd Trondson married Åse and I find from 1691 that his father Trond Skredtveit used Åse 16 some years. He probably had land at both the farms simultaneously. Trond Åse experienced in 1684 [sic, probably 1694] an unfortunate event which is described under Åse. He happened to kill a soldier by name Siver Knutson. Trond was acquitted, but had to pay 40 lodd [1 lodd = 14.6246 grams] silver to father of the dead one. I find him after that back at Skredtveit. Probate after Trond died was held in 1709. The ownership was all of Skredtveit, 1 tnK in Everland, Strømstøyl under Tveit in Grungedal and 5 quarter tnK in Tveit. The value was over 1084 rd and Trond was almost debt-free.

Dottera Asgjerd arva då ½ tnK i Hærstad.

Alv was probably a son of Vetle Storåsli and used simultaneously Åmli and later Skafså 3.

In 1615 Alv had one-fourth of the farm which was inheritance with his wife. Ånund Momrak, Halvor Songedal and Ånund Hærstad owned the rest. His wife had also inherited land at Tortveit, Hærstad, Songedal and Opsund. From about 1623 he lived at N.Tveiten. He was a large landowner and had in 1624 allodial property at Tveiten (1½ tn 1 mK), Lauvvik (1 tnk), Opsund (4½ mK) and mortgages on Skræi (1 tnK) and Åsen in Seljord (2 tnK). Later he also received 1½ tnK at Bringsverd and 4½ mK at Berdal. Thus there was close to 9 tnK land property at the most. Around 1627 Alv was killed by Rolv Døli, but he is mentioned at the farm all the way until 1637. Then there had been a probate and his wife Guro inherited 4 tnK and stayed as user for many years. She had land at Tveiten and Lauvvik. For several years she had 2 tnK at Midtgarden Byrte and from 1648 until 1651 she lived at Berdal in Vinje at her son Knut's house.

Guro was the daughter of Gro Gunleiksdtr whose probate was held at Hærstad in Fyresdal in 1669. Her daughter Asgjerd inherited ½ tnK at Hærstad then.
