Biography

THOMAS HATCH married LYDIA GYLES on Feb. 11, 1616/17, at Tonbridge, Kent, England. By 1628, THOMAS was a teacher at the parish of Wye, Kent, England, where he was "presented to the Bishop by the churchwardens at wye for teaching school without a license; and they presented him at every subsequent court until Jun. 9, 1628, when he procured the necessary license."

THOMAS and his brother, Elder William Hatch, immigrated to Plymouth Colony in the 1630's. William came first, with his family, on the ship Hercules. William was a part owner of that ship. He returned to England and again voyaged to New England in 1638, this time as a joint venturer in the ship Castle. It is possible that THOMAS and his family were passengers on the Castle.

He settled in a part of Scituate west of the old townhouse, near a small brook that runs in the meadow, and twenty rods west of the road. He was freeman in Scituate, Mar. 5, 1638/39. He witnessed a will of Nathaniel Tilden on May 12, 1641. Nothing more is known about him.

The area of Scituate where THOMAS settled is known as "Two Mile", where his sons, Jeremiah and Thomas, settled. The Two Mile, granted in 1640, was the only part of Scituate that crossed the North River. In 1738, the north part of Two Mile was annexed by Pembroke, and in 1788 the south part was annexed by Marshfield. There is a Hatch Pond, west of Mill Pond Lane in Marshfield, that fits with the old Scituate map of the Two Mile. Mill Pond Lane runs north from the junction of Maryland Street and Union Street. Hatch Pond is on the west, south of the junction between Mill Pond Lane and Pine Street.

LYDIA married second, John Spring, of Watertown, Middlesex, MA, about 1654, and they continued to live in Scituate. LYDIA lived apart from her second husband for three or four years, when on Oct. 6, 1659, the court ordered that "she repair to her husband." However, she was still living alone in Scituate in 1665.
