BARTHOLOMEW HARRIS is reported to have been a merchant, yeoman (farmer), and Mayor of Barnstaple in 1602. He was born about 1560. On Jan. 18, 1586/87 he and ELIZABETH COLLAMORE were married in Braunton, Devon, England.
They both died in Barnstaple, Devon, England, a seaport on the west coast of England. He died Oct. 10, 1615, at the age of 55. She died before Dec. 7, 1647. Braunton is about 4 miles east of Barnstaple, and Bishop's Tawton is about 1 mile south of Barnstaple.
BARTHOLOMEW may have been related to other mayors of Barnstaple, John Harris in 1578 and 1596, and
Richard Harris in 1608 and 1626. During this period there was a tendency for families to monopolize the
office of mayor. With BARTHOLOMEW having been the mayor at this same time, it is suspected that he
is related. It is also known that John was the father of Richard, and that John named BARTOLOMEW one of
the executors of his will dated Feb. 6, 1600/01. So, although not proven, it is suspected that
BARTHOLOMEW HARRIS is the son of John Harris.
