Biography

THOMAS DIMMOCK was born about 1600 in England. Some theorize that he was the son of Edward Dymoke of Pinchbeck, England, and baptized October, 7, 1604, possibly in Pinchbeck. This line is referred to in several sources, none of which offers references or documented vital statistics to lock him in as a descendant of this family. Through this line, Thomas would be a descendant of the Dymokes of Scrivelsby, King's and Queen's Champions of England, and also of the English royal line through Edward III

Elder THOMAS DIMMOCK became the leading man of Barnstable, and in one way or another was connected with all the acts of the first settlers. He was townsman in 1643-44; was deputy to Plymouth in 1640-43, and 1648-50; was appointed magistrate or judge in 1640, and was reappointed in 1644; was one of the Council of War in 1644, and later a lieutenant in the militia. He was ordained an elder in the Barnstable church, of which society he had been a member from its organization. Before his removal to Barnstable he had married ANN HAMMOND.

On Nov. 11, 1635, at Dorchester, Norfolk, MA, the following appears in the town records: "It is ordered that ... Mr. Demicke ... (among others, five in all) or any two of them shall have power to lay out a hundred and fifty acres of medow to Israel Stoughton." To this, a footnote was added that "Thomas Dimmock was a selectman this year". He left a will before June 4, 1658, at Barnstable, Barnstable, MA.

The burial site of THOMAS DIMMOCK is not marked by a stone. In 1939, in a tercentenary celebration of the town of Barnstable, a stone was erected in honor of THOMAS DIMMOCK. It is located about one mile east of the Barnstable County courthouse. A bronze tablet on a natural boulder reads: "This Boulder is Erected as a Memorial to Elder Thomas Dimmock who with Rev. Joseph Hull Received the Charter for the Land Now Occupied by the Town of Barnstable. On This Knoll he Built a Fortification House in 1643".
