GEORGE WEEKS is said to have come to Dorchester, in 1635 on the ship James, the same ship that brought Rev. Richard Mather to America. However, this ship set sail from Bristol, Somersetshire, England, on May 23, 1635, just a matter of days after the birth of son, JOSEPH.
There is a tradition that four brothers came together; that one was drowned in landing; that one settled near Boston; that one went "east"; and one "southwest."
JANE CLAP was a sister of Capt. Roger Clap, who married Joan Ford, daughter of THOMAS FORD. JANE married second, Jonas Humphrey of Dorchester. Jonas died Mar. 19, 1662. JANE died Aug. 2, 1662.
GEORGE and JANE were admitted to the church, Dec. 21, 1639; and he was "made ffree" May 13, 1640. He was one of the "Seven Men" (Selectmen) of the town in 1645, 1647, 1648, and perhaps in other years; and was frequently appointed to other positions of trust. He was a surveyor, as well as a farmer; and was often placed on commissions to lay out roads.
The spelling of the name at the time of emigration was WEEKES, but was changed to WEEKS within a
generation or two. It is spelled WEEKS on the gravestone of Ammiel, in 1679.
