Biography

WILLIAM TORREY was born Dec. 21, 1608, in Combe St. Nicholas, Somersetshire, England, about 2 miles northwest of Chard. He married first, Agnes Combe on Mar. 17, 1629. She was the daughter of Joseph Comb. She was baptized Jan. 4, 1608, and died Feb. 14, 1630.

WILLIAM married second, Jane Haviland, daughter of Robert Haviland and Elizabeth Guise. She was baptized Aug. 2, 1612, married about 1630, and died Apr. 27, 1639.

WILLIAM married third, ELIZABETH FRYE, about the time he came to America. He sailed from England in 1640 with three brothers, James, Phillip and Joseph. It is thought they came either on the "Charles" or the "Hopwell." Record that show they came on the "William and Mary" in 1630 are inaccurate.

Capt. WILLIAM TORREY was admitted freeman May 18, 1642, in Weymouth, Norfolk, MA. He was involved very early in the affairs of the town and was appointed Lieutenant of the militia, and was later captain of the artillery. He was elected Clerk on May 22, 1650 at a general court of elections held in Boston. He was Deputy, Selectman, Town Commissioner, Representative to the General Court, and Magistrate.

When his brother, James, died in 1665, WILLIAM became the guardian of his niece and nephew, Mary and Jonathan, and they came to live with the family.

Both WILLIAM and ELIZABETH died in 1690, and it is thought that they are both buried in the old cemetery in Weymouth.
