Biography

JOHN SHEPHARD was born in 1623 in the Parish of Lawford, Essex, England. He married REBECCA GREENHILL, daughter of SAMUEL GREENHILL and REBECCA BASENDEN, Oct. 4, 1649, in Cambridge, Suffolk, MA. She was born in England about 1634.

JOHN was made Freeman at Cambridge, May 22, 1650. He and REBECCA lived in Cambridge, MA until after the birth of Thomas in 1666, the last recorded in Cambridge. They removed to Hartford, Hartford, CT at that time.

JOHN was known as Sergeant John Shepard in Hartford. He resided in what is now known as Lafayette Street, just south of the new State-House, and owned land to the Wethersfield bounds. He was a cooper.

REBECCA died on Dec. 22, 1689, and JOHN married second Mrs. Susannah Goodwin, widow of Sen. William Goodwin, on Aug. 3, 1691, the marriage taking place in Hartford. On Sep. 8, 1698, he married third Mrs. Martha Hanbury, widow of Arthur Hanbury, also probably in Hartford. All his children were by REBECCA.
