Biography

JOHN MARSH was born in Braintree, Essex, England, April, 1618. He came from England to Newtown, Middlesex, MA, in 1635, when he was 17 years of age. He accompanied the HOOKER migration to Hartford, Hartford, CT, in 1636, where he was one of the original proprietors of Hartford. He served in the Pequot War in 1637 under Colonel Mason. His home lot, in the distribution of 1639, was on what is now Front Street, then the road from the Little River to the North Meadow.

He married ANNE WEBSTER, daughter of Gov. of Connecticut, JOHN WEBSTER, about 1642. He continued to live in Hartford until 1659. He was chosen chimney viewer in 1658.

In 1659, he joined the group of "withdrawers", under the lead of his father-in-law, and settled in what is now Hadley, Hampshire, MA. He lived there for a time, before going to Northampton, where he united with the church there, June 18, 1661.

ANNE died Jun. 9, 1662, and JOHN married second Oct. 7, 1664, at Northampton, Hampshire, MA, HEPZIBAH FORD, widow of RICHARD LYMAN. She is our ancestor, daughter of THOMAS FORD and ELIZABETH CHARDE, the mother of SARAH LYMAN, and step-mother of SARAH's husband JOHN MARSH, who is the son of the subject of this biography. JOHN MARSH was selectman at Hadley in 1674-75. HEPZIBAH died Apr. 11, 1683, at which time JOHN probably removed to Hartford.
