ANNE KNUTSDOTTER is from the Sælid [Sæli on map below] farm, located near the hamlet of Langlim. Langlim is at the northern end of Sundsbarmvatnet (Lake Sundsbarm). Near the middle of that lake is the island Sæliøyl. Sælid is located along the lake shore near that island. The farm can be reached by taking the road from Mandalen and following the road, alongside the lake, to the western shore. Part of the road is now private, requiring a toll payment to pass through the Vinsvål (Vindsvoll) farm.

Just a couple of kilometers past the Sælid farm are the Guldnes Mines, which date back to 1538. Copper and silver ore was first discovered by German miners. King Christian III ordered the recruitment of more German miners. There were no provisions for the miners and they clashed with the local farmers. In 1540, the farmers, from nine villages, joined to run off the Germans in the "Bonde Revolt" [Farmer's Revolt]. The rebellion was put down by a royal army. In the end, sixteen of the farmers were sentenced to death. Ten avoided death by paying heavy fines. Of the remaining six, one was made executioner for the remaining five.

The first Norwegian "dalar" was made of silver from the Guldnes Mines in 1545. In 1960 a dam was built at the lake for hydroelectric power. Many of the remains of the earliest mines are now under water.
