Biography

BENJAMIN was born in Coventry, Tolland, CT. He married Oct. 7, 1787, LUCRETIA RICHARDSON, and settled in Pelham, Hampshire, MA, where he was a member of the School Committee in 1798. He later moved to Ludlow, Hampden, MA., and from there to Greenwich, Hampshire, MA, then to Bennington, Bennington, VT. BENJAMIN's uncle Thomas died in Bennington in 1812, and is buried there.

From Bennington, BENJAMIN moved to Geauga County, OH. He then moved, with the family of his grandson, Christopher (son of James Marsh Jewett) to McHenry County, IL, and later settled near Antioch, Lake, IL, where he died on Oct. 15, 1845. Lake Co. is about 50 miles north of downtown Chicago, in the extreme northeast corner of Illinois. Prior to March, 1839, the Lake County area was part of McHenry County.

BENJAMIN was buried at Green Ridge Cemetery, Kenosha, WI. His son, Henry Barloe Jewett, was living in Kenosha at the time and was later buried in the same cemetery.

LUCRETIA died while the family was in Greenwich and was likely buried there. In the 1930's the area, which includes the town of Greenwich, was flooded to create the Quabbin Reservoir. 7,613 burials were exumed at the time and 6,601 of the remains were removed to Quabbin Park Cemetery. The remaining 1,012 went to other cemeteries. Presumably the remains of LUCRETIA are among those that are now at Quabbin Park Cemetery.
