Land is identified in western New York, by Ranges, Townships and Lots. The Townships can be of varying sizes, but in Ontario County most are "about" 36 square miles. But rather than 36 Sections within a Township, there are Lots. And, it seems each Township decides how they will designate those Lots. In the Township of South Bristol, there are 106 Lots, but the Township is split between a northern and southern half, and there are Lots numbered 1-53 in each half!
The numbering starts in the SE corner (of each half) with Lot No. 1 ... then proceeds north to 5 ... west to 6, and back south to 10 ... then west to 11, and north to 15 .... etc. Our family had land in Lots 1 (Oramill) and Lots 9 and 12 (Jonathan) ... all in the extreme southeast corner of the Township. Lot 1, is the most extreme .... Naples Township is adjacent to the south, and Yates County touches the corner to the southeast.
